DESCRIPTION: The Yorkville Children’s School is a new school located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It is a neighborhood school that provides students with a child-centered comprehensive education that will develop them into academic, creative, and socially aware leaders of the 21st century. Beginning in Kindergarten, our students engage in a literacy-based curriculum with a focus on project-based learning. We balance a rigorous, standards based curriculum with authentic learning experiences.
School staff is encouraged to attend summer retreat and participate in after-school programs, (Compensation according to the UFT contract and advance notice will be provided. Staff participation in this activity is voluntary, but strongly encouraged, as it is very important to the development of the school).
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: New York City Certification in the appropriate area, with satisfactory ratings.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES: The role in small school are varied and complex and serious consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate through their resume and cover letter experience and or/willingness to become involved in these essential aspects: • Collaborating in a literacy-based, inter-disciplinary planning and teaching teams • Knowledge and experience in early childhood development, including academic readiness, cognitive, social and emotional development • Practicing an open-door policy and developing best practice to facilitate professional growth and collaboration • Ability and availability to coordinate special programs • In-depth experience in utilizing Balanced Literacy and mathematics

SELECTION CRITERIA: The successful candidate will demonstrate:
• Evidence of expert knowledge across subject areas, including a deep understanding of student engagement, differentiated instruction, balanced literacy, the planning and implementation of extended units of non-fiction study, scientifically-based assessments, and using data to drive instructional practices in the classroom
• Demonstrated success to develop and used project based learning units
• Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and evaluate individual, small group, and whole-class instruction
• Ability to establish and maintain relationships with families, including ongoing, open communication
• Ability to integrate technology in the classroom
• Excellent classroom management skills
• Demonstrated success to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, students, etc.
• Familiarity with professional literature and best practice in early childhood/elementary education
In addition to interview and resume, teacher candidates must present a teaching portfolio including: evidence of philosophy of education, evidence of curriculum planning such as course outline and lesson plans, and any teaching artifacts collected throughout their teaching career. Teaching artifacts may include student work, images of student work and presentations, and curriculum development examples. Applicants must also provide three references.
